Friends of the Animals

Friends of the Animals, Gainesville, FL of North Central Florida

About 10 years ago, ERA Trend realtor Darlene Pifalo began working with local charities to help animals. Darlene and others banned together to provide help and support to the Gainesville Pet Rescue. Their efforts were greatly appreciated, but they wanted to do more and help other organizations as well. So the group, with Darlene as president, formed a 501C3, nonprofit organization named Friends of the Animals of North Central Florida.

Funding for the organization is raised through garage sales, fundraising dinners and donations. The group continually looks for new fundraising ideas and volunteers.

The Alachua County Commission and Alachua County Department of Public Works provide the budget for the Alachua County Animal Shelter. Once this budget has been depleted, Friends of the Animals of North Central Florida provides additional funding if available and as needed to assist with educating the staff. Contributing to educational seminars, assisting with travel expenses for seminars and upgrading and replacing computer equipment at the shelter are just a few of the things the organization has been able to do.

Recently, the Friends of the Animals of North Central Florida donated money, and Darlene personally matched the contribution to provide animal oxygen masks to the Alachua County Fire Department. Previously, the fire department was forced to use masks designed for people when rescuing pets from fires, and they were oftentimes ill-fitting. The new masks are made specifically for animals, available in different sizes and reusable.

The main goal of the Friends of the Animals of North Central Florida at this time is to raise $250,000 to purchase a mobile spay and neuter unit. This unit will provide assistance to individuals who may not be able to afford to take their pet to a veterinarian for services. There will be a minimum charge for this service; however, it will be based on the individual’s income level and need.

All donations and volunteers are welcome and needed. G
