At the end of this month I will be completing my first full year as Superintendent of Alachua County Public Schools, and it has been an exciting and rewarding time.
Throughout the year our students and schools have won recognition for their outstanding achievements. Just recently Newsweek Magazine ranked three of our high schools—Eastside, Buchholz and Gainesville— among the top 1.5% of all high schools in the nation, with Eastside ranked 4th overall. We’ve had many students earn top prizes in prestigious regional, state, national and even international academic competitions this year, evidence of the strong educational foundation provided by our schools and teachers.
Our high school students continue to outperform their peers nationwide on the rigorous Advanced Placement tests and on the SAT. Our elementary, middle and high school students do significantly better on the FCAT NRT (Norm Referenced Test), also known as the Stanford 10, than students nationwide in both math and reading. The proficiency rates for our students are also at or above state averages in most grade levels and subjects on the FCAT SSS ( Sunshine State Standard) test.
We’re certainly not resting on our laurels, because there is more work to be done. We are currently analyzing FCAT results and considering additional strategies that will allow us to effectively address the needs of all of our students, particularly those who are struggling.
I encourage our citizens to become involved in our schools in some way during the upcoming school year—as volunteers, mentors or business partners. Educating all children takes a communitywide effort, but the potential rewards are well worth that effort. When children succeed, we all win.
