in, Gainesville, FL PEOPLE IN NEED of healthcare are fortunate, as North Central Florida has access to some of the best health care in the United States. The Gainesville area is home to four hospitals with a total of more than 1,900 beds, and that number is growing. Many physicians, surgeons, and dentists maintain practices in the county, making it the largest per capita count in all of Florida.

Shands Hospital, with its affiliation to the University of Florida, hosts some of the top medical professionals in the world. Shands at UF is the center of a health-care community that covers a good portion of North Florida. Made up of nine not-for-profit hospitals, Shands Healthcare consists of more than 1500 University of Florida and community physicians covering a multitude of medical specialties including, but not limited to: family practice, pediatrics, trauma, transplantation and neurosurgery.

The Level I Trauma Center at Shands at the University of Florida provides care for patients with traumatic critical injuries. The care provided is rendered by a multidisciplinary team that includes: pre-hospital personnel, University of Florida trauma surgeons, consult physicians, nurses and ancillary staff. With the addition of a Level I Trauma Center, Shands hospital is able to provide trauma care not only for the Gainesville area, but for areas including Tallahassee, Jacksonville and Orlando.

The new University of Florida Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Institute opened last fall on SW 34th Street. The 127,000 square foot multi-service facility provides comprehensive evaluation and care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions.

North Florida Regional Medical Center is a 278-bed hospital and medical park with more than 400 physicians on staff in 40 different specialties. Since being founded by a group of physicians in 1972, NFRMC has provided the community with high quality, cost-effective healthcare. A full-service medical and surgical acute care referral center serving 14 counties, NFRMC offers comprehensive heart care, cancer care, women’s health, diabetes care and neuromusculoskeletal services in Gainesville, Florida. North Florida Regional Medical Center is committed to providing the community with the highest quality healthcare in a comfortable, caring environment.

Operated by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, the Malcolm Randall Veterans Administration Hospital supports teaching and research through its affiliation with the University of Florida Health Science Center and other colleges and Universities. It is a federally funded hospital that serves eligible medical, surgical, and psychiatric patients with primary, secondary and tertiary care. The VA also benefits from its proximity to the UF medical school, being right across the street from Shands at UF, with many of its physicians and staff having ties to the university.

Gainesville and North Central Florida has been ranked by the AARP as the 11th best community in the country for retirees. What better place for our senior citizens to enjoy a wonderful climate, excellent amenities, and all of our top-of-the-line health care facilities? Some of Gainesville’s retirement communities and assisted living facilities include The Village, The Atrium, Alterra Sterling House, Bailey Village, and Park Place. Oak Hammock, with ties to the University of Florida is Gainesville’s newest facility. It provides a resort–style community for retirees, offering campus privileges including admission to most cultural and sporting events, library, museums, performing arts, and most classes being taught at the university.

The University of Florida also has the Institute on Aging. This facility greatly benefits our community seniors by offering expertise on a variety of aging related topics. They coordinate research, education and community service projects helpful to area senior citizens.

Gainesville’s medical community is rapidly growing and providing such an array of services for all of our citizens from seniors, to young adults, and children as well. With its continual growth and willingness to advance and improve, our medical community provides many job opportunities for local citizens and makes our area more attractive to those who wish to relocate.
