Gainesville Otolaryngology Group, P.A., Gainesville, FL EXPERIENCE AND new technology; the best of both worlds. Add to this a friendly, efficient staff, with a patient-centered office, and you have the Gainesville Otolaryngology Group, P.A.Best of Both Worlds
Here, they provide services involving all aspects of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) care, from Head and Neck Surgery to allergy testing and shots, with their own in-house allergy lab. Two full time Audiologists, Dr. David Walker and Dr. John Wiseheart, add to the team, performing hearing testing, newborn infant screening, and Hearing Aid evaluations and fittings.
“This is the oldest Otolaryngology Group in Gainesville,” says Office Manager, Gayla G. Eaddy, who has been with the practice for nearly 20 years. Started under the leadership of Dr. James A. Gershow in 1981, it has grown to include Dr. James H. Walker, Jr. and Dr. Jeremy S. Melker. They each have special strengths they bring to the table. Dr. Gershow has proven himself a leader in many areas: he was the first to bring ENT laser surgery to private practice and the first to use this technology for snoring problems. He introduced endoscopic surgery to the area. He stood his ground when many doctors were using antibiotic prophylaxis for patients with chronic ear infections, even in the face of criticism. Now others have caught up to his thinking, as research has proven that prophylaxis has led to a rise of resistant bacteria.
With third-generation patients now coming to the office, Dr. James H. Walker, Jr. has seen many children we know. Specializing in pediatric ENT, he has a gift of putting children at ease. He plays with the children while examining them, so they always leave with a smile on their faces. Simply put, children love him.
Dr. Melker is the most recent addition to the practice. He brings with him many technological advances. For example, Coblation tonsillectomy, where pain is markedly reduced and recovery is much faster (often on the order of days rather than weeks). He also performs Image Guided Sinus Surgery, which adds a further margin of safety in difficult sinus operations; he was instrumental in North Florida Regional Hospital updating to the latest, most advanced software for this procedure. In addition, Dr. Melker integrated an electronic medical record into the office setting. Nurses use laptop computers to instantly access information instead of searching for paper charts, and the physicians are able to more rapidly complete accurate and legible notes. Often, a patient’s treatment note is electronically faxed to their referring physicians before the patient has even left the office!
Having been in Gainesville since he was four years old, Dr. Melker prides himself on his hometown Gainesville roots and personal relationship with his referring physicians. Furthermore, having completed his medical training and ENT residency at the University of Florida, he is able to personally contact UF physicians when his most complicated patients require tertiary care and to expedite referrals.
“It’s been so much fun working in my hometown and having the opportunity to serve the community in which I was raised. Rarely does a day goes by in the office where I don’t see someone who’s a longtime friend,” said Dr. Melker.
With university quality services in a private practice setting, the doctors at Gainesville Otolaryngology Group, P.A. have a simple philosophy. As Dr. Gershow says, “We won’t do anything with a patient that we wouldn’t do with our own families.”
