For the Love of Bud
THE LOVE FOR a local teacher and his family has been pouring in from students and the community. Bud Seymour, who has been a part of many local schools as a history teacher and assistant basketball coach, was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and a rare liver disease.
“This has made me appreciate so much. I wouldn’t trade places with anyone in the world,” were the thoughts spoken by Bud Seymour.
His wife, Betsy, added, “Sometimes our son asks us why we are teachers when it pays so little money. We do it because we love it. We are able to touch so many lives. At moments like this, it comes back to you. So many students, and their parents, have reached out to us.”
Head Coach Bob Horodyski of Buchholz High School, has known Bud as an assistant coach and friend for many years. He organized a fundraiser at Buchholz called, Slam Dunk for Seymour.
“It was an opportunity to raise some money to help this wonderful family,” said Coach Horodyski. “All of the money from the entrance to the game, as well as money earned from the raffle of donated prizes, are being given to help the Seymour family.” It was unclear if Bud would be feeling well enough to go the event, but as it turned out he was able to go, which was very therapeutic for many. Being able to see him and Betsy, with their sons, Zach and Tyler, brought smiles to many faces.
As each member of both the Mt. Dora opposing basketball team and the Buchholz home team were introduced, they individually climbed the bleachers to personally shake hands with Bud. This act of respect touched all of our hearts.
Throughout the evening, many other students and others who have known the Seymour family also climbed the bleachers for the opportunity to give them their best wishes. The genuine care and concern could be felt by all. G
