North Florida Women's Physicians Helping March of Dimes Read about something you can do, with North Florida Women’s Physicians, to help others.

For many years, North Florida Women’s Physicians (NFWP) has been a household name in North Central Florida. This private obstetric group delivered 1,450 babies last year in Gainesville, and each of their 10 physicians is dedicated to bringing healthy, full-term babies into the world. Because of their devotion to excellence in prenatal care, NFWP has been a partner with the March of Dimes for many years. The annual March of Dimes “WalkAmerica” walkathon is a favorite activity each year for the more than 60 employees and physicians at NFWP.

All year long NFWP staff eagerly participates in a multitude of March of Dimes fundraising activities with the goal of raising money to decrease birth defects, prevent preterm deliveries, and increase the community’s awareness of the importance of complete prenatal care. Some of the activities that NFWP’s staff participates in throughout the year are: the year-long “Bean Bags for Babies” sales, “Blue Jeans for Babies,” and encouraging patients and visitors to fill out a “Prematurity Bracelet” or Walkathon “sneaker” with the donor’s name to post on the office walls.

The biggest March of Dimes event that NFWP looks forward to each year is the 8.6-mile walkathon. Alachua County is recognized as the number one WalkAmerica in the nation, with over 5,000 walkers and contributions greater than $600,000. The theme for 2004 is “Use Your Feet To Give Premature Babies A Hand.” For the past two years NFWP has sponsored a Spirit Station at the Covered Bridge apartment complex on NW 23rd Avenue, where they greet, refresh and encourage walkers. All year, NFWP is busy networking with various pharmaceutical companies to donate Spirit Station supplies. Walkathon walkers should stop by this year’s NFWP Spirit Station for a rest and a visit with physicians and staff.

Another way NFWP helps in March of Dimes fundraising is through online donations. NFWP invites you to go to www.walkamerica.org/nfwp if you’re interested in making a life-saving donation to save babies.

This year, NFWP has a goal to raise more than $5,000 to help pay for research and programs designed to fight prematurity. NFWP challenges other physicians in the Gainesville community to join their team on March 27th in this important fight for healthy babies.
