Who Ya Gonna Call? For your AC work
The good news is that the cost of calling a professional for an annual tune up will more than pay for itself. With AC being the biggest guzzler of electricity in your home or business, finding ways to keep your money in your pocket and out of the electric company’s hands and avoiding high repair bills is good news anytime.
For 27 years, Gainesville native Ed Newmans has provided heating and air conditioning service and installation to business owners and local residents. As the owner of Newmans Heating and Air Conditioning since 1980, Newmans has built a reputation on fairness and honesty. “From time to time, shops show up on the news caught doing bad business. We don’t promote selling folks things they don’t need. We just won’t tolerate that at all from our technicians.”
Newmans’ business ethics have earned him commercial projects with the University of Florida, 1st National Bank of Alachua, Gainesville Technology Center, and a number of local car dealerships and churches to name just a very few of his clients. Also specializing in custom home AC needs, he has worked with homebuilders in Alachua Highlands, Steeple Chase and the Jockey Club. He has also gained a following with customers who have routine service needs with their existing units.
In the tidy metal cases of an AC unit, the real operation of cooling living spaces is well hidden. Fan motors, compressor pumps, electronic circuit boards, and high-pressure lines all come together to make living in the heat more tolerable. But any machine, especially one with moving parts and under pressure, needs proper attention beyond a routine filter change to keep it running efficiently – or to keep it running period! Less than optimal conditions of any of the components could spell trouble.
Initially, poorly operating AC units will probably go unnoticed, with the exception of an electric bill that creeps up, as the unit must stay on for longer periods of time to achieve the desired temperature. Over time, the over working of a unit in poor tune will ultimately cause complete failure and on the heels of a number of months of unnecessarily high electric bills will come a hefty repair bill.
To avoid this certainty, the fate of all unchecked AC systems, Newmans recommends a tune-up. “To avoid the large repair bills, it is important to have a system inspection, thorough cleaning, and proper adjustments prior to the heavy demands put on the system in the coming months.” Newmans offers a 15-point inspection that includes checking: refrigerant and operating pressures, coil, air temperature across coil, controls and switches, belt wear and tension, blower motor, pan and line, thermostat, fan and limit controls, furnace cycle, filters, and safety controls.
In addition, the coil is cleaned, all connections are checked and tightened, and the system is leak tested. Lastly, the Newmans’ technician will provide serial and model numbers if needed by the customers and will make any recommendations. For a short time, Newmans Heating and Air is offering this Spring Tune Up service for single units requiring under an hour labor at $56, which includes a $28 discount.
With all the choices, it’s hard to know whom to trust. Local businesses with a long track record are a good bet because a bad reputation usually spells a quick end to repeat business. “We are not out of town folks coming and going, we’re here. We’ve also kept our business at a size that we can keep a grip on it so that we can provide quality service,” said Newmans. Besides keeping busy with the day-to-day operations at Newmans Heating and Air, Newmans is involved with or supports the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club, and the YMCA among others.
